FRANCE: Smoking and business, the evolution of the price of the pack of cigarettes since 30 years!

If the e-cigarette takes such a big boost it's not just a health issue. Since 30 years, the price of the pack of cigarettes has steadily increased pushing consumers to find alternatives. The price of tobacco has never increased so much under the presidency of Emmanuel Macron. Next month, it will be the sixth increase in the price of the cigarette package since May 2017, month of the arrival of the candidate Macron. For the occasion, our colleagues of the site Monsieurvintage.com propose a return on the evolution of the price of the tobacco since the years 50 to today.

1,50 EUROS THE PACKAGE IN 1990, 10 EUROS IN 2020! A MONGIOUS INCREASE!

This is no longer a surprise for smokers, the price of the pack of cigarettes will rise to 9,30 euros at the end 2019. In 2020, it will reach 10,20 euros. It is therefore time to find an alternative to smoking, otherwise it will continue to pollute the health and empty the wallet.

Faced with this steady rise in the price of tobacco, some decided to quit smoking and others switched to e-cigarettes to reduce their budget. In 2 years and a half of Macron presidency, the price of the cigarette package will have risen to 6 times in France, for an increase of + 2,65 euros on average on the cigarette package:

May 15th : rise of + 10 cents on the price of the pack of cigarettes
November 13 2017 : + 35 cents
1er March 2018 : + 1 euro
1er March 2019 : + 50 cents
1er June 2019 : + 20 cents
1er November 2019 : + 50 cents

THE TOBACCO AWARD IN HISTORY!

Between 1950 and 1975, the price of tobacco fell by 25%. It stagnates between 1975 and 1991 and begins to really increase from the January 10 1991 with the promulgation of the Evin law (fight against alcoholism and smoking). Therefore, the tobacco prices will rise sharply, recording 100% increase between 1991 and 2001.

Between 1990 and 2019, the price of the red Marlboro package has gone from 1,50 euros to 8.80 euros, an increase of 486% in almost 30 years (in absolute increase). The tobacco industry in France represented 18,9 billion euros of turnover for the year 2018. The State taking 83% of taxes on a pack of cigarettes, he pocketed 15,6 billions of tax revenues (a gain of 702 million euros compared to 2017, thanks to the sharp rise of 2018).
