SPAIN: UPEV files a complaint following the incessant attacks on the vaping of the Ministry of Health

In Spain, vaping seems to have become the victim of a real witch hunt by the Ministry of Health. Incessant attacks and campaigns comparing vaping to smoking, through theUPEV (Unión de Promotores y Empresarios del Vapeo), vaping professionals have decided to say "stop" by filing a complaint directly to the People's Advocate.

ANTI-VAPING COMMUNICATION IS NO LONGER TOLERATED!

The debate on the health aspect of vaping seems to have slipped in Spain. With the end of confinement due to Covid-19 (coronavirus), the vaping sector to decide to take measures to defend itself against the many criticisms of the Ministry of Health. The Union of vaping promoters and entrepreneurs (UPEV) therefore decided to file a complaint directly with the Ombudsman.

Indeed, all the professionals of the vape are tired of the incessant attacks of the Ministry of Health and they believe that the attitude of recovery of the government towards their sector is excessive. The anger is even greater when they see that none of the members of the opposing party, in particular the said ministry, wanted to take steps to dialogue or seek a point of consensus. According to them, no effort is made to show the vape as it really is.

The trigger for this reaction from vaping professionals was the recent budget of nearly 500 euros to be granted to strengthen a campaign launched in September 000, which already had one million euros, in which vaping is compared to smoking. An initiative that has caused a lot of ink to flow in the vaping sector, since the ministry itself has acknowledged having taken certain creative liberties by making such a comparison and qualifying this alternative as equal or even more harmful than tobacco.

This "error" led the institution to speak out publicly on the subject. However, this communication campaign is back and the UPEV acted quickly, emphasizing that the vape " is a very good alternative to quitting smoking ". Arturo Ribes himself, president of the organization, rejects the fact " that they publish the same campaign again with a total of one and a half million euros ".

His criticism was exacerbated because he judges “ irresponsible for a department to publish a campaign in which they say that all products are the same when they know full well that it is not ". In fact, this is what accompanied the brief presented to the Mediator on June 3 to take action and invite the Ministry of Health to reconsider the message launched with the communication campaign which has just been resumed.
