The issue of tobacco and vaping is more and more present in Switzerland since a few months! From the 1er June 2019, the Swiss Federal Railways will enforce their no smoking (and vaping) directive in all train stations across the country, as a follow-up to the decision of the Union of Public Transport as to this problem.
It is now official, from the 1er June 2019, cigarette and e-cigarette will not be really welcome in SBB stations. The reasons ? Air quality and cleanliness are greatly affected by smoke and cigarette butts. The maintenance on cigarette residues amounts to 4 million francs a year, a fortune for the railway company.
Ottavia Masserini, CFF spokesperson in Bern, insists on this recurring problem: " Today, the increasing number of commuters means more frequent use of stations at rush hour. Cigarettes can cause inconvenience to customers, especially during busy times. Cigarette butts are often not thrown into ashtrays, but end up on lanes or docks. The result is an impression of poor quality for the customer and a deterioration of the environment.".
At the beginning of the summer, vaping will no longer be possible in the station ... Finally, not quite because the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) have planned to create smoking areas (or vapers will also have to go) on the wharves and at the entrance of the building. The signage of the zones is under study and will be detailed the 1er June.
Of course, prohibition also means punishment for non-compliance, as Ottavia Masserini points out: " People who refuse to respect smoking areas can be returned. The common sense of station security personnel will apply. In areas where it was already forbidden to smoke before the change, fines or referrals may be issued. ".
