In Canada, the number of young vapers in the city of Ottawa has surpassed the number of tobacco smokers. In 2017, 10% of students in the nation's capital used an electronic cigarette, compared to 6% who smoked cigarettes in the last 12 months.
Ottawa Public Health, which is behind this survey, wants to introduce measures to reduce the attractiveness of vaping among young people. The organization makes a presentation of its recommendations at a meeting on Monday.
The Ottawa Public Health study found that 23% of Ottawa high school students, from 9e to 12e year, used an electronic cigarette at least once. Nearly half (48%) of Ottawa students from 9e to 12e year believe that vaping has little or no health risk.
In the United States, the Director of the Public Health Service talks about vaping as a
epidemic. The use of the electronic cigarette jumped from 12% to 21% between September 2017 and 2018 in this country. In Canada, the consumption of vaping products by young people would also have grown significantly.
Health Canada may recommend that the federal government limit the sale of these flavored products as a measure to address the phenomenon of youth vaping. The tantalizing flavors are in fact largely responsible for the attractiveness of young people for vaping, says a US study filed during federal consultations.
The measure, as well as restricting online sales and nicotine concentration limitation, is one of the recommendations made to Health Canada following a broad consultation that the agency launched in April to understand the phenomenon. vaping.
