In Canada the witch hunt no longer seems to stop! Recently, Dr. Vera Etches, Ottawa's Chief Medical Officer for Public Health recommended that vaping and tobacco packaging be harmonized to reduce the appeal of e-cigarettes among youth.
The proposal of the Dr. Vera Etches is part of a series of suggestions it has made to Health Canada as part of the federal agency's consultation process to reduce the attractiveness and accessibility of vaping products for youth.
By the fall of 2019, all packs of cigarettes sold in Canada must be brown in order to make them as unattractive as possible. The municipal agency suggests that the packaging of vaping products is simple, standardized and without logo.
In a letter sent to Health Canada and dated 25 May 2019, the head of Ottawa Public Health reports that vaping rates are increasing among youth in the federal capital.
The data shows that vaping outpaces tobacco use among Ottawa youth, says Ottawa Public Health. In 2017, 10% of students reported using an electronic cigarette compared to 6% who had smoked tobacco in the previous 12 months. The data also reveal that 23% of high school students from the 9e to the 12e year made use of an electronic cigarette at least once.
« The flavors are attractive to young people and they encourage experimentation. Young people are more likely to start vaping with flavored liquid solutions, especially sweet, fruity products. flavors added to nicotine may mask the natural irritation and may contribute to the misperception that there is no danger Dr. Etches explained in her letter.
Ottawa Public Health also recommends that manufacturers post messages on their products warning the user of the dangers of modifying their device. Dr. Etches' paper will be tabled today at City Hall at the Ottawa Board of Health meeting.
