In a recent press release for the launch of the 5th edition of the Tobacco Free Month, the Alliance against Tobacco has decided to take stock of heated tobacco and its challenges in terms of public health. According to the association, there is a " false promise of heated tobacco In risk reduction.
As part of the Tobacco Free Month, Alliance Against Tobacco has decided to take stock of this “new” product represented by heated tobacco and these challenges in terms of public health.
“The ACT would like to stress that these new tobacco products are primarily aimed at renormalizing consumption and promoting the sale of tobacco. The argument of less harmfulness is a tactic used by the tobacco industry which market these products to obtain advantageous taxation allowing them to compensate for a loss of income following the decline in tobacco consumption. " says Loïc Josseran, President of the Alliance against Tobacco and Professor of Public Health at the University of Versailles-St Quentin, and adds: “While no independent study has concluded to date on the lower risk that there would be from consuming these new tobacco products, it is important to point out that a risk presented as lower is not an absence of risk. "
On the basis of available epidemiological data, the Alliance contre le Tabac is therefore sounding the alarm on these new products, which represent a real danger to public health and not can in no way constitute a recommendable smoking cessation solution. All the more so because an Italian study has shown that heated tobacco brought more non-smokers into smoking than it brought smokers out of tobacco addiction.
« The heated tobacco even if it contained less carcinogenic components than traditional cigarettes, contains significant amounts. It is therefore not lawful to say, as the tobacco industry does, that this product is of less risk to health, or that it can replace cigarettes. Heated tobacco is even less possible to get out of tobacco. " declares it Prof. Daniel Thomas, cardiologist and vice-president of the Alliance Against Tobacco.
Finally, the Alliance Against Tobacco launches an important reminder: " Heating tobacco and electronic cigarettes are often associated by the tobacco industry and presented as an alternative to cigarettes. It is dangerous not to distinguish these two products which are very different. " page (in French).
The main difference is that the electronic cigarette is not a tobacco product and therefore does not cause combustion. In fact, heated tobacco, through the chemical composition and toxicological effects of the aerosols produced, is much more harmful than electronic cigarettes.
