COVID-19: Towards a ban on e-cigarettes and tobacco in New York?

Even as the United States is severely affected by the Covid-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, the question arises of banning tobacco and e-cigarettes in New York City. When the governor Andrew Cuomo announced a state of emergency (PAUSE Executive Order) on March 22, New York State ranked as the hardest hit by COVID-19, with more than 20 people tested positive by the SARS-CoV-2. (Covid-19). On the same day, New York State Academy of Family Physicians took a stand calling for an immediate ban on the sale of tobacco and e-cigarettes in order to fight the virus.

The current pandemic seems to be a good excuse to force certain incomprehensible decisions. In fact, in the United States, AFP (New York State Academy of Family Physicians) State of New York recently advocated an immediate ban on the sale of tobacco and e-cigarettes to combat Covid-19 (Coronavirus).

» As our state and country strive to respond to the rapidly evolving and intensifying COVID-19 pandemic, which affects our residents and which is straining our health care system, mounting evidence demonstrates the link between smoking and the increased risk of COVID-19 progression " , said Barbara keber , MD, President of NYSAFP.

» Now more than ever, it is essential that the state and the medical community take action to prevent our young people from using these highly addictive and deadly products and to help our patients reduce their risks during this pandemic. She added.

The NYSAFP statement said a study published February 28 in the Chinese Medical Journal who compared Chinese patients with COVID-19 who were not smokers to those with a history of smoking.

« Since smoking has been a demonstrated risk factor for progression of COVID-19 disease, which leads to increased use of medical services, especially ventilators, we hope that by reducing the number of smokers, we will be able to further reduce stress / demand on the already limited supply of medical resources, especially ventilators " , said Jason matuszak, MD, president-elect of NYSAFP.
