COVID-19: Waiting for a pandemic for the e-cigarette to be recognized as "of public utility"

A terrible news sometimes brings its share of consolation! In these troubled times by the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), the e-cigarette has gone from " not frequentable " at " public utility tool »Thanks to the many organizations that defend this risk reduction tool every day.

A BLUR, A DOUBT THEN A DECREE!

Following the brutal containment measures, total vagueness settled in e-cigarette shops in France. Should we close ? Can we stay open ? However, the decisions were clear and vaping businesses were not considered important or even essential to the common good at the time.

As stated Jacques Le Houezec, public health consultant with our colleagues in Telegram « It was unclear for a few days, but the situation was fairly quickly resolved. The Minister of Health considered it preferable that vapers do not resume smoking at this time ».

But a government decision came to the rescue of vapers and vaping professionals. On the morning of March 18, a decree published in the Official Journal authorized the reopening of businesses specializing in the sale of vaping products, despite the containment measures imposed because of the Covid-19.

For FIVAPE (Interprofessional Federation of the Vape) it is a major and historic event for vaping in France: “ The decision published by decree this morning is a recognition of the public health mission carried by French professionals in the vape sector, and in particular by the almost 900 structures that are members of Fivape, the Interprofessional Federation of Vape. Industrialists and specialized businesses, independent from the tobacco industry, have enabled 700 French people to definitively escape the harmfulness of cigarettes, and 000 million to get away from it by adopting vaping in a process of smoking cessation . They represent nearly 3% of the activity of the sector in France, bringing hope to escape the tragic consequences of smoking, attested each year by the death of 90 French women.".

LEARN FROM THIS DECISION!

It will indeed have required a pandemic and especially the arrival ofOlivier Veran to the post of Minister of Health so that the e-cigarette is finally recognized as a public utility! Vape has been ignored, attacked for years now or denounced by the media, institutions and successive governments. This decree of March 18, 2020 could however be the first stone allowing vaping to be recognized as a public utility definitively. As the FIVAPE in its communicated, it is now up to traders or manufacturers to demonstrate responsibility in order to prove to everyone the seriousness and importance of the vaping sector for public health.

If the future seems uncertain today, a door finally opens for vaping in France and it would be a shame not to rush there with a smile as the wait was long. However, the fight is not over and it is a safe bet that certain choices of French and European leaders will still have to be questioned in the near future.

The first step is taken, only the future will say if this day of March 18, 2020 was a historic turning point for the most effective of the risk reduction tools against smoking.
