Finland intends to be the first European country to introduce a total ban on smoking which also includes vaping. The countdown has begun and a whole series of steps will be taken to reach the target.
Soon the end of cigarettes in Finland. Smoking is bad for the health, dangerous and above all more and more expensive - any person who has already passed in front of a tobacconist has understood it for a long time. Finland is one of the countries in Europe where the number of smokers has already fallen sharply, thanks to the many information campaigns of recent years. The Scandinavians however, now want to knock out the cigarette.
In 2010, the Finnish government had already announced a total ban on smoking for 2040. The date has been advanced at the beginning of this year. The countdown has therefore already begun with the new anti-smoking law of the year 2016 and will stop in 2030. In Europe, Scandinavians are still the model students. According to an OECD study from 2015, only 15,4% of the Finnish population smokes, as do its neighbors in Sweden and Norway. We cunt a lot more in Greece (23%), in Hungary (25,8%) and in Latvia (24,6%).
The Scandinavian countries are, in terms of health awareness, social justice and equal rights, precursors within Europe. Even the annual EU survey, the World Happiness Report, confirms the high quality of life in Scandinavia. In the top 5 appear three Scandinavian countries: the Norway, Denmark and the Finland. Communion with nature, protection of the environment and the cult of health are attributes that release hormones of happiness among Scandinavians. Addictions, diseases related to tobacco consumption and infertility do not really fit into this context.

The Finnish government has a long-standing goal to end smokers. And it's a success. If we compare the period between 2005 and 2015, we detect a clear trend, especially among young people from 14 to 20: smoking has become pretty old in Finland.
Since 1978, advertising for cigarettes and tobacco is banned in Finland. Since 1995, smoking is not allowed in public facilities. Since 2002, it is even forbidden to present packets of cigarettes in stores. Prices for tobacco and alcohol are also higher in Finland.
But to completely ban cigarettes and electronic cigarettes, chewing tobacco and snuff in the Finnish mentality by 2030, requires drastic measures. Imagine that your neighbor quietly roasts and expels his cloud of smoke towards your balcony. A misstep that could reduce your neighbor's personal freedom. Indeed, since the beginning of the year, real estate companies have the right to forbid their tenants to smoke on their own balcony, terrace or in the courts (there must have been someone for cafter before). Even candies in the shape of pipes or cigarettes disappear from the stalls so that young people are not tempted. The chocolate cigarettes have thus become a pale childhood memory of the 90 years. A vision of horror or the love of neighbor to Scandinavian?
A complete program is planned. Concretely, it also becomes more and more difficult for Finnish traders to attract customers to these luxury products: the licenses authorizing the sale of tobacco have been for years already granted according to the sales area, we must now add to that a juicy extra fee of 500 € for each crate. The goal is to reduce consumption by high taxes, but also to make selling less and less profitable.
But the forbidden fruit is always the most tasty. Is such a criminalization of tobacco really reasonable and should not we instead invest in prevention and health awareness? The Finnish government already has a ready answer: on CNNKaari Paaso, prevention expert at the Finnish Ministry of Health, stresses that the problem must be systematically eradicated from all sides. In this struggle for freedom, breathing less smoke does not make it visibly unhappy. Anyway, we will always have a look at the index of happiness in the coming years.
