NEW CALEDONIA: Towards a regulation of disposable e-cigarettes?

The debate has been launched in New Caledonia for a few days. Mentioned last week in government and Congress, the use of disposable e-cigarettes has become a real topic that could lead to regulation.


BAN THE E-CIGARETTE AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE?


In 2019, 21,5% of young Caledonians aged 13-18 claimed to have vaped during the last thirty days, according to the youth health barometer. A figure five times higher than in Australia. On the territory, no regulations govern the sale of disposable electronic cigarettes without nicotine, but some professionals have made arrangements. Nicolas Riverain, manager of an electronic cigarette shop: " We impose our own regulations by prohibiting the sale to those under the age of eighteen" page (in French).

Disposable products, mainly sold to the youngest in service stations and certain foodstuffs. It would therefore be urgent to adopt regulations in this area. This is what defends Ingrid Wamytan, head of the addiction prevention program at the Health and Social Agency.

« It would be good if electronic cigarettes were prohibited for minors. And why not go further by deciding that it is only available on medical prescription?". Awareness workshops for students and parents should be set up in schools through the Declic system. Before a possible regulation, under discussion within the executive.
