SCIENCE: Tobacco, e-cigarette, David Khayat criticized for advising Philip Morris

Defend vaping, advise a tobacco giant like Philip Morris… This is a debate which once again puts the conclusions of several studies which prove the harmlessness of e-cigarettes to the background. This time it's the oncologist David Khayat, founder of the National Cancer Institute which is paying the price.

"STOP DEPRIVING YOURSELF", THE POSITION OF "SCANDAL"

In January, the oncologist David Khayat, founder of the National Cancer Institute presented his new book " Stop depriving yourself! ". In his book, David Khayat denounces the dictates of contemporary "hygienism" and "moral judicialization". Alcohol, tobacco, sucre, gras, the oncologist recommends not to deprive yourself. For him, it's all about differentiating between danger and risk.

As the report Le MondeDavid Khayat recommends for those who cannot quit smoking to try the'e-cigarette or lheated tobacco, much less dangerous. Thus, the professor advocates " something less carcinogenic". If in fact, the oncologist who had himself converted Johnny Hallyday at vaping is right, yet he finds himself accused of having advised the giant Philip Morris. A double hat that the founder of the National Cancer Institute would also exercise for other companies " food, consumer goods and tobacco sectors “, As he explained in September 2020 during a conference in Athens.

In an email sent to Le Monde, the company Philip Morris claims to have hired David Khayat in 2017 and " solicits its advisory services on scientific issues related to harm reduction in general, with a focus on tobacco risk reduction ". Should we therefore consider that David Khayat's words have no scientific value?

By taking this side, we clearly end up questioning the studies proving the harmlessness of vaping. Proof that a moral trial can sometimes have consequences that are totally contrary to the message that one wishes to convey.
