STUDY: The e-cigarette is definitely not a gateway to smoking for young people

The subject has been treated many times but keeps coming back. Once again, the good word comes from the United Kingdom. A study published by the British Medical Journal ensures that the e-cigarette is not a "gateway" to youth smoking. They smoke less and less and have more and more a bad image of tobacco in general.

THE YOUTH FALL FOR THE VAPE DOES NOT PUSH TO TOBACCO!

This is a common complaint made to the electronic cigarette: it would be the royal road to "real" tobacco, that of cigarettes and cancers. As a result, the growing popularity of these products among young people are worrying all the more because they would lead to a shortened life as a classic smoker.

Yet researchers are beginning to defeat this misconception. The latest study from the United Kingdom, (carried out with 250.000 young British from 13 to 15 years) thus ensures that the link between electronic cigarette and conventional cigarette is not nearly as obvious as it was thought. For example, the popularity of e-cigarettes among young people has not dampened the decline in the number of tobacco smokers in this age group. From 1998 to 2015, the percentage of 13-15 years old who have ever smoked at least once collapsed : from 60 to 19% in 17 years. The proportion of regular smokers has gone from 19 to 5%.

This decline continues in the same way today for occasional smokers, but it slowed slightly for regular smokers as the popularity of the e-cigarette increased. But the study finds that linking the two does not make sense as there is also a slowdown in the decline in alcohol or cannabis use. « The change in habits is not exclusive to smoking, but reflects a wider change in substance use by young people«, ensures the study.

Finally, British researchers also find that the image of the traditional cigarette has also greatly degraded: in 2015, 27% of teenagers interviewed consider it acceptable to try the cigarette. They were 70% 17 years ago, in 1998.

Once again, it is therefore proven that the "gateway effect" towards smoking among young people is only a chimera ... See now when the next attack on the subject will point the tip of his nose.
