UNITED STATES: In San Francisco, we allow highs but we forbid stopping smoking!

Sad news that we have already dealt with you a few days ago. The city of San Francisco in the United States now seems to be sure of its sadly historic choice to ban e-cigarettes. While it will become difficult to quit smoking with vaping in 2020, it will still be possible to “get high” because the recreational use of cannabis is legal in the State of California for those over 21 since the 1st. January 2018 ...

A UNANIMOUS VOTE TO END THE E-CIGARETTE!

San Francisco became the first major American city on Tuesday to ban the sale of e-cigarettes on its territory, by a unanimous vote of its city council. The ordinance highlights the need to act in the face of the “impressive increase” in vaping among young people, which would have “significant consequences on public health”.

The text adopted by elected officials said that to be sold in San Francisco in a shop or via the Internet an e-cigarette must first have received the green light from the FDA, the federal health agency, and the latter has approved none so far. The democratic mayor of the very liberal Californian city, London Breed, has already announced that it will ratify the order within ten days.

The health authorities criticize in particular the leader of the sector for the American market, Juul , accused of laxity with young people with its exotic flavors (mango, cucumber, menthol), its shape that looks like a USB key and its high percentage of nicotine (5%). The start-up, in which Altria, the maker of Marlboro, has massively invested late 2018, is headquartered in San Francisco. Its sales have increased eightfold in 2018. Juul, which is valued at 38 billion, owns 68% of the US e-cigarette market. Its turnover is expected to grow from 1,2 billion to more than 3 billion this year.

NO VACATION, YES TO CANNABIS DEFEAT

The text adopted by San Francisco to counter e-cigarettes expressly concerns itself with exposure to nicotine during adolescence which "can damage a developing brain" and "also increase the risk of an future addiction to other drugs ”. While vaping and smoking cessation will be sanctioned by this decision, the recreational use of cannabis is legal in the state of California for people over 21 years of age since January 1, 2018.
