Do you remember the meeting organized by the FDA after the battery explosions? (see our article). And well in the continuity of this business, Underwriter Laboratories (UL), a leading global scientific organization in the field of security just announced have received authorization to evaluate electronic systems and batteries of electronic cigarettes and then to issue certification.
UL 8139 CERTIFICATION: A GUARANTEE OF RELIABILITY FOR E-CIGARETTES?
The US Department of Homeland Security in January reported an increased number of incidents involving e-cigarettes and resulting injuries. These events, which follow the dramatic growth of the electronic cigarette market, highlight some security concerns. Underwriter Laboratories will now be able to test and certify vaping devices through a system approach that evaluates the device, its battery and its charging system.
The goal is to specifically evaluate the safety of electrical, heating, battery and charging systems. UL 8139 does not evaluate e-liquid or resistance, nor is it intended to assess the long-term or physiological effects of consumables.

« For many, many years Underwriter Laboratories evaluates, tests and certifies battery-powered portable devices including batteries, modules, chargers and power supplies" , said Ghislain Devouge, Vice President and General Manager, UL Consumer Technology Division.
«With this UL 8139 certification, our specialized science, research and engineering teams were able to develop an appropriate methodology to confidently evaluate and test e-cigarettes to avoid electrical and fire hazards. There has recently been a strong demand for this type of service. Today, we are pleased to be able to offer our testing and certification services to manufacturers and distributors of electronic cigarettes «
